The same command allows you to change the size of an existing table. You choose вЂњFormat -> TableвЂќ from the menu bar and enter the number of rows and columns you desire. Creating a table works very similar to the way it does in Scrivener. Table support is poor, but so is it in every other application IвЂ™ve used. Once again, however, I found the lack of a global stylesheet to limit the usefulness of the feature, and the same bugs I found in the Markdown formatter existed in the HTML formatter.

If Markdown isnвЂ™t enough for you, you can go hard core and insert full blown HTML pages into DTP, and edit them directly inside the product. This omission limited the utility of the feature for me, but IвЂ™m happy to see the feature at least exists in the product and IвЂ™m hoping the company will improve it in future releases.

Unfortunately, I found the Markdown formatter to be a bit buggy, and I could find no way of creating a global stylesheet that could be used across all Markdown documents. Markdown is a popular syntax used mostly by programmers to create simple documentation, and is a feature IвЂ™ve long wanted to see in Evernote. Another option you can use for writing is the integrated support for Markdown formatting. The integrated rich text editor is just as powerful as EvernoteвЂ™s editor, but the UI isnвЂ™t quite as nice (not that EvernoteвЂ™s editor is particularly stellar). IвЂ™m talking about managing large volumes of technical reference documentation.ДTP is best used as a database repository for information and documents that were created from other sources, but you can use the built-in Rich Text capabilities to write documents and notes directly in DTP.

This is much different than clipping a web page here and there into a notebook. I see great potential in this feature for myself, as one of my primary use cases is to compile all of the developer documentation I use into a single location. But the advantage of using DTP to do this is that you get all the rich organizational and navigational infrastructure of DTP wrapped around the downloaded web site.

The functionality reminds me of an old (and still selling) tool named WebWhacker that is used to download entire web sites. Once imported, you can browse the entire web site from inside DTP without being bounced out to your web browser. This goes way beyond the simple one-page Hoovering that Evernote provides DTP will walk the entire web site page-by-page and load it into the database. I havenвЂ™t tried that yet, but I havenвЂ™t yet found a tool that lets me do that, so IвЂ™m intrigued by the possibilities.ДЄnother feature I really appreciated was the ability to import entire web sites.

You can import just about any type of file, including Microsoft Office files, and if you purchase the Office Pro edition ($149.95), it will link with your e-mail application allowing you to archive e-mails and documents in one database. Smart Groups perform much like EvernoteвЂ™s вЂњSaved SearchвЂќ feature, but allows for more complex search conditions. It provides both hierarchies and tags, as opposed to Evernote which provides very limited support for hierarchies. I did not find the learning curve all that onerous, but perhaps thatвЂ™s because IвЂ™ve spent a lot of time thinking about this kind of functionality. It seemed to me like a much more serious tool than the very basic organizing principles of Evernote. I was generally impressed with the application at first sight. Many comments that I found focused on the higher learning curve of DEVONthink and what some reviewers felt was unnecessary complexity.

For me, the term вЂњnote-takingвЂќ fails to capture the full essence of what I expect to do with these types of tools.ДЄfter searching around a bit, I found a few reviews of the tool, along with the inevitable comparisons with Evernote. The company positions the product as an вЂњinformation managementвЂќ application, a term that I prefer to вЂњnote-takingвЂќ, a more typical and pedestrian phrase for applications of this ilk. I evaluated DEVONthink Pro, which costs $79.95. ItвЂ™s been very interesting finding and using these applications that are exclusive to the Mac.ДEVONthink, made by Devon Technologies of Couur dвЂ™Alene, Idaho, was introduced in 2002.

As I scan across the Dock bar of my Mac desktop, my productivity apps occupy the middle, comprised of Scrivener, OneNote, Todoist, Dash, MindNode Pro, Markdown Pro, and the Microsoft Office Suite of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
